Everything is data

Everything is data, not only we are in the business of moving, displaying or transforming bits of data from one place to another, we are actually living it everyday, in every event, thought or action, data is at the core of our own existence.

There could not be evolution without data, there could not be progress, information and probably without data there could not be life itself as we know it.

When I find myself in some loop at work sometimes I force myself to go back to basics, which often leads me to this thought: we are just collecting and transforming customer's data from one place to another, we are in the business of managing data as efficiently as possible.

This is why we studied data structures at university early in CS. You can't develop anything without data and on top of more layers of data, is just impossible. We need these efficient abstractions because of the amount of data we handle on every program and to store them, everything else from network, to clients to databases is just sugar on top of data.

With the AI explosion we are just starting to see how properly using these huge amounts of data can improve almost any process we know, our jobs will evolve, some will disappear and others will arise, as it did before and will keep doing. Those who understand and respect data should lead our way.
